Herb Society AGM 2017, Tatton Park, Cheshire
The 90th anniversary of the Herb Society and the 2017 AGM took place in the beautiful setting of Tatton Park in Cheshire. Here is a short account from Trustee Barbara Wilkinson:
In September last year we had a wonderful day at The National Trust’s, Tatton Park in Cheshire. One of the many highlights of the day was meeting our new President, Alys Fowler.
To celebrate the Society’s 90th year we had no excuse but to have balloons, cake, flowers and even a raffle. As so many people are dairy and gluten free both the cake and lunch catered for this. We had a small HS stand which included natural herb soaps, (made by a member), tea towels, cards, poster and much more herb related items, sales from this and the raffle generated income that went to the society.
After the AGM, lunch was served in the Gardener’s Cottage giving us all a chance to chat over a beautiful herb associated three course lunch. The tour of the gardens was beyond expectation for those not familiar with it, unlike those of us that visit regularly, we knew it would be a sheer delight. I must admit I get great pleasure from sharing places I enjoy and watching people learning to love them too.
The garden tour took in the Victorian glasshouses, fernery, topary, walled, rose and Japanese gardens (which, we were reliably informed, is the best outside Japan). It was at the Japanese garden the cameras really came out, clicking away, which has led to many shared photos as a result. There was much more to see, but there is only so much you can do in a day, so many left saying they will be back! Just like any party, everyone went home with some of the cake which the caterers kindly cut and wrapped for us.
The next get-together is booked for 8th September at The Crowne Plaza hotel Stratford-on-Avon. There will be stands of herb/nature related products that we feel we shall all enjoy, and our president will give a talk and do book signing. Another great opportunity to network and share a fun, yet informative day in beautiful surroundings in the centre of Stratford, we look forward to seeing you all.
