As an educational charity we have a range of different activities going on at any point in time. These activities need a range of skills and experience for us to be able to deliver them. Our current opportunities to work with, volunteer and support the work of The Herb Society are below:

Chair of Council

The Herb Society is recruiting for a new Chair for 2025. This role provides leadership and direction to the Council of Trustees (Board of Directors). The Chair’s objective is to enable the Council to fulfil their responsibilities for the overall governance and strategic direction of The Herb Society.

The Chair must ensure that The Herb Society complies with its governing document, charity law, company law and any other relevant legislation or regulations and to make sure that The Herb Society pursues its objectives as defined in the governing document. The Chair’s role is also to work in partnership with the Trustees, helping them achieve the aims of the Herb Society.

Trustee

The Herb Society is recruiting for the role of Trustee. The Council of Trustees are collectively responsible for making sure The Herb Society is doing what it was set up to do. Trustees lead The Herb Society and decide on how it is run, working together as a team.

Being a Trustee means making decisions that will impact on how The Herb Society meets its remit, how successful The Herb Society is and how it is perceived by its members (stakeholders) and the external public.  You are required to use your skills and experience to support The Herb Society and ensure it is meeting its remit.

Treasurer

The Treasurer is responsible for the overseeing of The Herb Society finances in conjunction with the Finance manager. They are responsible for overseeing and providing guidance about the organisation’s financial aspects, including risk management, cash management, investment decision, and financial planning. They should have an understanding of financial legislation, market trends, and financial management software.

In conjunction with the Finance Manager, they oversee the budgeting, accounting, review procedures and financial reporting, advising the board on financial strategy, and advising on fundraising financial reporting, and investment activities of the organisation. 

As a trustee of the Charity, the Treasurer is expected to attend meetings where possible and make a statement on the financial health of the organisation at the Annual AGM.

IT/ Website Co-ordinator

The Herb Society operates a range of systems but at the core is our website (WordPress operated with plug ins) which we are looking to develop and maintain. Team support for some of our new ventures (social media tech, podcasts and others). As well as being the central point in the team to manage our third party IT support company. Picking up on any IT issues, logging and seeing them through to resolution and communicating progress where required. This role is very flexible in terms of times.

Online Media Co-ordinator

The Herb Society has a strong social media reach and we are looking to extend our presence through the use of online media. This role would be working to develop our YouTube channel, identify and manage opportunities for podcasts, online channels and other virtual opportunities for us to engage with a view to help us to grow our member numbers as well as to bring fresh new benefits to our existing membership.
