Mediaeval Monastic Herb Gardens. How the Monks’ and Nuns’ Secrets kept Plant Medicine Alive
November 13, 2021 @ 1:00 pm - 3:00 pm
Monastic Foundations for both men and women in Britain date from at least the 600s, but all ended abruptly in Henry VIII’s Dissolution of 1539. The buildings and Herb ardens were sold off, the libraries, with many herbals dispersed. What then did these foundations know, and what can we still learn from them?
John Adams has worked for a number of years on the library and herbal of Syon Abbey (1415-1539 now under Syon House, the London home of the Dukes of Northumberland), and will look at the broad sweep of this subject in England, as well as individual examples of herbals and herb gardens.
Event Cost – £15 (payable direct to the organiser)
Parking for this event is in the Top-up Car-park shared with Dilston Scouts – directions.
