Members, we’re excited to announce our first online event of the year!

Please save the date and join us online for a morning of glorious herbs, excellent speakers and knowledge that you can use at home, in our first of three online Zoom events this year.

Look out for your next Herb Society Newsletter for the link to purchase your ticket.

We have three very interesting speakers lined up and with them we’ll be exploring medieval herbal history, growing herbs from seed and a very important topic – herbal sustainability.

Growing Herbs From Seed – how to get the best results

Earthsong Seeds is a land-based enterprise offering a unique selection of herb seeds grown on our own certified organic land in Somerset. Run by a small team of herbalists and gardeners our mission is to share the joy of growing herbs and to encourage and educate people in how to work with herbs to support their health and wellbeing.

Ben is Head Seedsman at Earthsong Seeds, overseeing the growing, processing and sales of seeds and plants. With a background in plant conservation, Ben has spent over 20 years as a grower, buyer, consultant, and all-round devotee of herbs. During this time, he has lived in the Himalayas growing high-altitude Ayurvedic herbs, worked for Pukka as their sustainable herbs manager, and more recently has been studying at the School of Intuitive Herbalism. Ben has now put roots down in North Somerset to focus on Earthsong Seeds.

Ben will be available to answer your questions after his talk. Just use the Zoom Chat facility to ask.

Plants Traditionally Used In Medieval Britain

While connecting to the natural world can seem quite a niche thing nowadays – for those with interests in gardening or the healing qualities of plants, for example – for most of our past, it was very much a way of life. In this talk we’ll explore some of those ways and look at some of the plants used traditionally in Britain.

Based in North Wales, Cassie grew up with a love of history and spent many a summer weekend in fields and historic sites demonstrating aspects of medieval life to the public. This pastime and a rural home inspired an interest in the plants around us, leading her to qualify as a Medical Herbalist BSc Hons in 2016 and blending the subject into her medieval displays.

Cassie will be available to answer your questions after her talk. Just use the Zoom Chat facility.

The Healthy Alternative – Why Should I Care? – The Importance of Sustainability in the Herbal Supply Chain.

Sustainable Herbs

What do you know about where the herbs in the herbal products you buy come from? What do you know about the companies producing those products? Are they investing in the long term human and ecological communities from which they source? Or are they looking for the best deal on the market? Most importantly, do you know why this matters? In this presentation, Ann Armbrecht will discuss these questions, some of the issues prevalent in today’s supply networks, and what SHP is doing to address these issues.

Ann Armbrecht, PhD, an anthropologist, is the director of the American Botanical Council’s Sustainable Herbs Program. She is the author of The Business of Botanicals: Exploring the Healing Promise of Plant Medicines in a Global Industry, the co-producer of the documentary Numen: The Healing Power of Plants, and the author of the award-winning ethnographic memoir Thin Places: A Pilgrimage Home. Ann was a 2017 Fulbright-Nehru Scholar documenting the supply chain of medicinal plants in India and lives with her family in central Vermont.

We are delighted that Ann will be joining us live from USA, to talk about the important work of the Sustainable Herbs Program.
